TBBS-NG: TIAD-ng and DOSBox

Postby Masher » Sun Aug 30, 2015 5:52 pm

Now you can run TBBS on modern Windows systems!

TIAD was a program developed by the original TBBS.org team (Tarix I believe). It allowed you to get a TBBS system accessible from the internet via telnet. It requires the IPX protocol to be enabled on both the TBBS computer and the computer running TIAD. Microsoft removed IPX support in Windows from Vista and newer. Support for running 16 bit (DOS) applications in 64 bit operating systems was removed as well. This makes it impossible to run TIAD or TBBS on modern windows systems.

But using some software tools, it's possible to run TBBS on modern Windows systems and Linux. These tools are DOSBox and TIAG-ng.

DOSBox is free software that allows you run old DOS applications in a virtualized computer. It's mainly intended for running old games, but with a few modifications to the code it'll run TBBS. DOSBox also has IPX support emulated within itself. And allows using an UDP IPX tunnel to allow others to play multiplayer IPX only games over the internet. It supports a lot of other cool features too, but for TBBS this is all we require.

TIAD-ng is an application that utilizes the UDP IPX tunnel DOSBox exposes. It can connect to the tunnel and supports the TIPX protocol of TBBS to allow TBBS to be accessible from the internet with telnet.

Be sure to read the documentation in the Doc folder, especially the tiad-ng document.
